QUOTE OF THE MONTH
"It is in your own individual genius that the answers lie, not in the pronouncements of experts who have no conception of the local environment in which you live every day of your life. Letting the experts run things is how we got into this mess to begin with."
-Stephen Harrod Buhner, Plant Intelligence and the Imaginal Realm

1. Judge: PSREC Violated State Discrimination Law When They Disconnected the Hart Family
A utility cooperative in rural Northern California has been ordered by Plumas County Superior Court Judge Janet Hilde to:
“…cancel the opt out fee and monthly fee for reading the analog meter, allowing Plaintiff (StopSmartMeters.org Director Josh Hart) to self-read the analog meter.”
The decision last week comes 14 months after Plumas Sierra Rural Electric Cooperative (PSREC) cut the electric wires to the Hart household in February 2014 though the family have paid for their full electric usage minus the illegal “opt out” fees. During that time, they have been living without electricity in an all-electric home in the Sierra Nevada mountains, without either a fridge or hot running water, depending on a wood stove for heat, cooking, and heating water. Despite electric rates being higher than ever, PSREC is spending thousands of dollars of ratepayer money on pricey out-of-town lawyers to appeal the verdict so they can continue to harm their customers.
We need to raise thousands of dollars as soon as possible to cover our mounting legal expenses- can you help by chipping in even a little to support what could be a precedent-setting legal case on smart meters, wireless issues, and EHS and disability rights?

2.  LA School Accommodates Electro-Hyper-Sensitive Teacher
Anura Lawson is a teacher at Johnie Cochran Middle School in Los Angeles. In 2013, Stop Smart Meters! helped her family get the analog meter replaced on their home. Anura is now speaking to the news media about her family's nightmarish experience with wireless and how only safe wired technology should be used in our schools, neighborhoods and homes.  Kudos to the Lawsons for speaking out! Watch the segment here.
(Note that lotteries are a scam and do not really help schools - see here.)

3.  PG&E Smart Meters Explode in Stockton, CA After Surge
An inebriated driver in Stockton hit a pole on March 30, causing a powerful electrical surge that led dozens of “smart meters” to explode or catch fire. No problems with analogs were reported.
Excerpt from the Stockton Record on the exploding smart meters:
“Stockton fire Capt. Bryan Carr with Engine 6, one of several fire crews dispatched Monday morning as dozens of electric customers began reporting explosions, smoke or the smell of burning wires, described the scene as “unreal” when his engine pulled onto Fairbury Lane, a residential street in southeast Stockton. Expecting to pull up to a specific address, Carr’s crew was greeted by a number of residents out on the street wondering why his engine wasn’t stopping at their house."

4.  Smart Meter Ban in Sierra Foothills Town Where PG&E Founded?
PG&E deployed smart meters into Nevada City in 2012. Three years of widespread negative experiences with the meters have recently come to a boiling point. In February, dozens of residents showed up to demand formal action by their council to join the 57 other local governments in California that have resisted smart meter deployment, fifteen of which have outlawed the meters.

5.  An Earth Day Statement on Technology and Community Rights
As we mark Earth Day 2015 today, let’s take a moment to reflect on the real threats to life on the planet, and take a look at some of the false, undemocratic “solutions” that do far more harm than good.
The truth is that the corporate capitalist economic system is killing the Earth.
More than seven billion humans live on Earth and most of us owe our existence to cheap oil, artificial oil based fertilizers and mechanized agriculture. Continuing to depend on limited toxic substances like oil and coal is leaving us a heated, disturbed planet with few energy options. Paying lip service to this problem, while diverting billions of dollars to fanciful false solutions like the “smart grid” that only line the pockets of the very wealthy is simply a policy of genocide.

6.  PG&E Threatens Sebastopol with RF Space Weapon (yes, really...)
From EMFSafetyNetwork.org: In 2011, Brian Cherry, PG&E’s Vice President of Regulatory Affairs, wrote to the CPUC’s Executive Director Paul Clanon, CPUC attorney Frank Lindh, and CPUC Interim Director of Consumer Protection and Safety Division (CPSD), Michelle Cooke:
Just a reminder, we are the first to propose a solar generator in space that will beam RF waves down to a receptor site and convert it to DC current. We have changed our receptor site from the Mojave desert to Sebastopol.”

7. San Antonio, TX Takes to the Streets to Stop Smart Meters! (Video)
On Saturday, March 28th, residents of San Antonio, Texas took to the streets to demand an end to smart meters, and to urge support of two bills currently in the Texas legislature that would force utility companies to offer a no cost analog opt out option for the entire state. Several organizations have coalesced in recent months, particularly in San Antonio, where CPS Energy- a municipal utility- has been forcing smart meters.

8. Overview of CPUC/ PG&E E-Mails from EMF Safety Network
From EMFSafetyNetwork.org: The CPUC is responsible for regulating the utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service. Instead, they partnered with PG&E and marketing companies on a smart meter propaganda campaign. CPUC President Michael Peevey intentionally delayed the legal process for years so PG&E could complete their deployment, despite knowing smart meters were overcharging and harming customers.
Thousands of emails between PG&E and the CPUC made public this year, illustrate their collusion and corruption. Together they concocted a punitive pay to opt out program, and ignored substantive complaints. The CPUC must address these issues by holding safety hearings, and restoring analog meters without coercive fees.

9. UK Business Institute: SM's an "Unjustified, Over-Engineered & Expensive Mistake"
An influential British business group- the Institute of Directors (IoD)- has called the British Smart Meter scheme an ‘unjustified, over-engineered and expensive mistake.’
