Activist's blog battles phone giants

ACTIVIST'S BLOG BATTLE WITH PHONE GIANTS
By Rachel Lamb

A CAMPAIGNER is using the internet to wage war on communications giants hoping to install new mobile phone masts in the town.

Colin Buchanan has set up a blog crammed with newspaper articles and the latest scientific research into health risks associated with living near the masts.

The 52-year-old music teacher hopes his site – nomoremasts.blogspot.com – will help fuel a campaign to halt plans to erect phone masts in two busy residential areas of the town.

He said: “We need a moratorium on all new masts as well as reviews of all existing masts.

“This is the biggest health issue we have ever faced. Phone masts aren’t pretty, but even less pretty when you realise they are quite likely to have serious health implications if you live near one.”

Colin claims that mobile phone companies rely on out of date studies to back up claims that masts are safe and choose to ignore important research into possible health problems associated with the structures.

His website features studies from around the world which have raised serious concerns over the safety of phone masts.

He said: “I want to get a campaign going in Helensburgh that is similar to the ones being spearheaded down south. I’m trying to bring together people who are worried about this and are keen to do something about it.

“There is a whole narrative that’s been built up alleging that the masts are safe but it is based on research from 1998.

“It is wrong to claim there is no hard evidence of the dangers. There have been at least 12 scientific studies focusing on this since 2002 and all of them have shown serious health problems arising.

“The government and the mobile phone operators seem determined to cover up this evidence.”

O2 is currently in talks with Helensburgh Golf Club about installing a mast on their land – just a stone’s throw from Colin’s home in Machrie Drive.

T-Mobile is also seeking planning permission to erect a 3G phone mast at Helensburgh Bowling Club.

A spokeswoman for O2 said: “In the past five years, the mobile phone health issue has been subject to no less than 30 scientific reviews carried out within the UK and overseas.

“In all cases, these reviews have come to similar conclusions that there have been no adverse health consequences established from exposure to RF fields at levels below the international guidelines.

“After taking guidance from expert and regulatory bodies in the field, O2 is completely satisfied that mobile base stations operating within the existing guidelines are safe and do not pose a health risk to members of the public.”

A spokesperson for T-Mobile said: “T-Mobile does not seek to minimise any potential health effects currently being studied and we have no influence over international bodies such as the WHO and ICNIRP which peer-review all the worldwide scientific studies

“The overwhelming international scientific consensus is that radio waves, at power levels beneath agreed international levels, do not cause adverse health effects.

“This scientific view is represented in the advice of the Health Protection Agency here in the UK and is the underlying principle of the planning regime for mobile phone masts in Scotland.”

  1. Is there really any hard evidence for your beliefs?
If you are right we have a cancer timebomb waiting to explode in ten years time.
But I remember BSE in the UK and the fears around that issue.

    Great Job!

I was surprised to see all the hard work you have invested your time in compiling informative information for others. I think you should be able to assimilate this information easily to the public.

I've also been working on this same subject, and i can't believe how blindly the public has bought into the technology craze.

A lot of people are hurting because of billions poured into the technology industry, and it isn't fair not to inform the public.

Do you mind if I use your well developed page as a link when I direct folks attention to this problem?

I find that the reason it is not a well developed issue is because of the billions that are made on it, and so it is a pet project of the rich. You know they will cover over any problem areas to make there money.

In answer to Dr Ann Sturley's comment, yes there is plenty of alarmingly unsurmountable evidence.

    Well, any way good job.

  3. Actually, there is so much hard evidence backing up the deleterious
effects of microwave radiation on the human organism that I am always
surprised when someone asks such a question.

Read the other articles in my blog. Read also the books "The Body
Electric" and "Cross Currents" by Dr. Robert O. Becker; "Electromagnetic Fields" by B. Blake Levitt; "Cell Phones" by Dr.George Carlo; "Would You Put Your Head In A Microwave Oven?" by Dr. Gerald Goldberg; and "Cellular Telephone Russian Roulette by Robert C. Kane.

  4. Recently, a massive scientific paper entitled the BioInitiative has been released by a group of highly renowned scientists. This is one piece of work - among many others - with nothing but hard scientific evidence.

_Renowned Scientists Issue Wake-up Call on EMF and RF Radiation Hazards

    http://www.govtech.com/dc/articles/138969

    Aug 30, 2007, News Report
An international working group of renowned scientists, researchers and public health policy professionals (The BioInitiative Working Group)has released its report on electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and health. It raises serious concerns about the safety of existing public limits that regulate how much EMF is allowable from power lines, cell phones, and many other sources of EMF exposure in daily life.

The report documents scientific evidence raising worries about health impacts including childhood leukemia (from power lines and other electrical exposures), brain tumors and acoustic neuromas (from cell and cordless phones) and Alzheimer's disease. There is evidence that EMFs are a risk factor for both childhood and adult cancers. EMFs from
such sources as electric power lines, interior wiring and grounding of buildings and appliances are linked to increased risks for childhood leukemia and may set the stage for adult cancers later in life.

The BioInitiative Report (http://www.bioinitiative.org) will be released on Friday, August 31, 2007 documents the scientific evidence that power line EMF exposure is responsible for hundreds of new cases of childhood leukemia every year in the United States and around the world.

Wireless technologies that rely on radiofrequency radiation (RF) to
send emails and voice communication are thousands of times stronger than levels reported to cause sleep disorders, headaches, problems with memory and concentration and other adverse physical symptoms.

Public health expert and co-editor of the report, Dr. David O.
Carpenter, director, Institute for Health and the Environment at the
University of Albany, New York states:

"This report stands as a wake-up call that long-term exposure to some kinds of EMFs may cause serious health effects. Good public health planning is needed now to prevent cancers and neurological diseases linked to exposure to power lines and other sources of EMFs. We need
to educate the public and our decision makers that business as usual is unacceptable."

Co-editor Cindy Sage of Sage Associates asserts:

"Public health and EMF policy experts have now given their opinion of the weight of evidence. The existing FCC and international limits for public and occupational exposure to EMFs and RF radiation are not protective of public health."

New public safety limits and limits on further deployment of risky technologies are warranted based on the total weight of evidence.

More information on the BioInitiative Working Group is available at

Yes, we are indeed sitting on a cancer time-bomb and it has already
started to explode and the longer people hide their egos behind their
pretentious pseudo-scientific smokescreens the longer it is going to take to realize the serious extent of this problem and actually do something about it.

    Kind regards,
